I’m a program evaluator by trade, though my career started in social work. Learning is the heart of it all for me. I love to support others’ learning and revel in opportunities to learn myself.

I was born and raised in Montana, but came to Oregon for college and never left—marrying an Oregonian sealed the deal! I’m equally at home in the city and the country, and I’m most myself near, on, or in a body of water.

When I’m not working, I’m trying to entertain a very energetic daughter (who is more often pretending to be a wild animal than practicing being a human), tending an overgrown garden, or finding time to bake or make jam.

I’m a writer and researcher driven by a deep curiousity about our world and the people in it. I came to research and evaluation through managing nonprofit public health programs.

Philanthropic evaluation is a family business for me. My work is guided by the memory of my grandfather, Robert M. Johnson, a longtime philanthropic leader. Bob believed it was philanthropy’s responsibility to elevate communities as experts of their experiences, take risks, and invest in change makers. I keep Bob’s “35 Keys to Effective Evaluation” (Council on Foundations, 1993) close at hand.

I live in Portland, Oregon with my husband and our dogs. Some days I’m working on evaluation & research projects; other days I’m chipping away at a novel or managing a woodland in rural Washington.
